NZ Greenstone Pounamu Mere on Wooden Base (35cm) #02

This beautifully Carved Greenstone Mere would make an impressive Presentation Piece, Trophy, Souvenir of New Zealand or as an alternative to the Traditional 21st Birthday Key.

The Mere is carved from Kawakawa Greenstone and has a Matte Finish (not polished) and measures approx 35cm Long by 10.5cm Wide (at widest points) by 1.5cm Thick (at thickest points) and has a Woven Black Cord.

The Base is made from Tulip Wood and measures approx 40cm Long by 9cm Wide

Carved in Hokitika, New Zealand and comes with Official Ngāi Tahu Authentication of the Greenstone Origin.

Mere Pounamu (or Patu Pounamu) were considered to be the most valuable greenstone items. They were the main symbol of chieftainship and were as valuable to Māori as precious stones were to Europeans. Traditionally, mere were used for stabbing and cutting, rather than delivering axe-like blows.
